Podcast review

The podcast ‘Eat Drink Asia’ is published and created by the South China Morning Post starting in 2018, with two hosts exploring different cuisine and food culture in China, Hong Kong and Asia in each episode.


In the episode of ‘Mooncakes then and now’, the two hosts inform and explain the Mid-Autumn Festival in Hong Kong as well as the special food mooncakes. The narrators describe and introduce the tastes and shape of mooncakes nowadays in detail. The use of descriptions help the audience to create senses, therefore the audience can imagine and have a clear picture of mooncakes in mind. An outline is also provided, thus the audience will understand the following content better.


Besides, different music is used in the episode. In the opening, it used music in a Chinese style, with different Chinese traditional instruments played, which matches with the theme of Chinese culture well. While the second music under the voice of the narrators makes the audience feel relaxed, which is also suitable for the theme of Mid-Autumn Festival. It creates an atmosphere of reunion and warmth. Despite narrators introducing the Mid-Autumn Festival, interviews are also conducted. The audience therefore have a deeper understanding about the informative content such as the history and the development and changes of mooncakes throughout years.
